Today was our first day off since our honeymoon (and our last until Christmas)! We had a lovely day of rest and recuperation and catch-up on work, learning lines and doing projects.
And... because we just couldn't stay away from Elf for our one day off, we ended up watching Elf, the movie (which, by the way turns 20 years old this year)! For my fun learning today- I wanted to learn some facts about Elf the movie...... Fact One! Jim Carrey and Chris Farley were both up for the role of Buddy before it went to Will Ferrell! Fact Two! John Favereau (who is an incredible by the way) was NOT interested in directing Elf---- because when it was first presented to him it was a dark and adult film! He insisted on making it PG and that's when he took the job. Way to stick to your guns, John! This would never have been the classic that it is if you hadn't gone with your gut. Fact Three! The Macy's manager was originally supposed to be played by.... Wanda Sykes! Fact Four! Will Ferrell got a lot of on-set headaches from all of the sugar he ate on the set of the show. Dan Beckmann was born to play this role onstage, as he eats more sugar than Buddy on a daily basis. That's all for now! I hope you've enjoyed learning more about this delicous classic movie that we all know and love. xo

Today's learning is very simple.
This morning, we dressed up as Buddy and Jovie to perform at "Breakfast With Santa", a huge annual event in Kearney at the fairgrounds where hundreds of kids come to meet Santa, have pancakes, make ornaments and get into the Christmas spirit! On the way out, dressed like elves, a teeny tiny puppy came up to us, whimpering, dirty and starving. We took him with us, and our friend Monica and her family took care of him, gave him a bath, got him checked for a chip, gave him a Christmas sweater and brought him to our house.... we named him "Pancake" because we were on our way to the pancake breakfast when we found him. We were all in love.... and 2 minutes later their owner knocked on the door and took him home. Which, of course is the happiest ending because he can be reunited with his family. But we sure did love him for a second. We found out he was a miniture Maltipoo (my FAVORITE kind of doggie in the entire world)- so for today's knowledge I learned.... ....Maltipoos are a fairly new breed of dog, having been around since the 90's! Meaning, when I was born.... there were no Maltipoos on the planet! (It's like I'm a dinosaur). Thanks for brightening our day, Pancake. We love you and will never forget you. Today, on my birthday and my first day of learning, Dan took me out to Suwannee, an incredible Thai food restaurant in Kearney, where we are staying for our current contract. It was a busy day, so on our birthday date, I learned a little more about the place where this food was originated.
First: Thailand used to be called Siam (until the 1940's)! Second: People refer to conjoined twins as "Siamese Twins" by that name because there were two brothers in Siam called Chang and Eng who were born in Siam, and when they arrived in England to become a circus act, they were called "The Siamese Twins" Third: Going on a rabbit hole with Siamese Twins, and learned that conjoined twins occur every 60,000 births or so, and 75% of these twins share organs with one another! Many do get seperated, but there are some really crazy cases you can learn about and read stories of twins who have remained conjoined online for their entire lives! Fourth: The best thing I learned about Thailand in my little jaunt today was that they have an annual Monkey festival, where local residents host a celebration and a huge buffet for all the monkeys as a way of thanking them for bringing thousands of tourists to the village each year! I definitely hope to go to this festival, or at the very least, become a monkey-visiting tourist in Thailand soon. |
